Labrador retriever portraits
A broad head and a short coat take oil well, and read clearly against a dark ground.

The Labrador’s coat is simple, so the portrait depends on the set of the head and the colour of the ground. Dark umber gives a black dog an edge. Cream gives a yellow dog room.
A photograph in open shade, with both eyes visible, is more useful than a sunny one. The regal manners are available when a coat is wanted; the classic oil is enough for most sittings.
