Cocker spaniel portraits

Ears and feathering need a ground pale enough, or dark enough, that the edges remain.
Studio example. A cocker spaniel in watercolour.
Studio example

The spaniel’s ears disappear into a mid-tone ground. Umber or cream keeps the outline. Olive can work if the dog is gold rather than black.

The studio example in watercolour is a cocker. Oil and the officer manner are equally available; the coat in that manner is painted, not worn in the photograph.
